Do you drive like it’s your job? What if we all treated driving that way? Instead of taking risks while we drive, use the resources below to get ready for getting behind the wheel and staying safer on the road.

Before you go: Talk about your job on the road

Vehicle crashes remain the most common cause of on-the-job fatalities. But safe driving isn’t complicated. The first step to preventing vehicle incidents in your workforce is talking to your employees about these five defensive driving basics:

  1. Always wear a seat belt. Make sure all employees have signed a written seat belt policy.
  2. Control your speed. Faster driving means higher risk of a crash.
  3. Avoid distracted driving. Consider implementing a cell phone while driving policy.
  4. Avoid impaired driving. Your drug and alcohol policy should cover this.
  5. Perform regular vehicle maintenance. Make sure employees know how to request maintenance and repairs.

On the road: Tools to succeed

What are the biggest risks when we are on the road? As mentioned above, distractions, speed, impairment and other drivers all play a role.

Here are some of the guidelines in our sample defensive driving policy:

  • Keep space between your vehicle and others. Keep a three-second interval between your vehicle and the one in front of you. When stopping, leave enough space so that you can see the rear wheels of the car in front of you.
  • Yield the right of way at traffic signals and signs. Yield to emergency vehicles and be prepared to yield for safety’s sake at any time.
  • Always honor posted speed limits, and slow down in dangerous conditions.
  • Avoid backing when possible. If you must, back up safely. Get out to check behind your vehicle before backing and go slowly.
  • Drive courteously to avoid confrontations with other drivers. It’s not worth it!
